What a wonderful weekend!!! Quinn had a big surprise for us on Saturday. For some reason, I always say "Hey" to her first and then work my way to Brooklyn's Box. We lifted the cover to her insulet and found her on a nose cannula. She was no longer on the C-Pap that took up her entire face. You could see her whole head and she is beautiful. Now that she isn't strapped down with the head gear, she is learning to crawl. I say this without exaggeration. She was on her belly crawling in her insulet. She is moving all over her bed. Richard had to re position her so she would be in the middle of the bed. It was an amazing site! You could really tell that she loved the freedom of not having her head strapped to a few tubes.
What does this mean? It means she is still on room air and the cannula is a thin tube that still has prongs that are in her nose. We would use one of these for oxygen flow and it would wrap around our ears. Hope that helps in describing her new contraption. Needless to say, it is a huge step in the right direction. She is also up to 23cc of feeding every three hours. EXCELLENT!!That is nearly 5 teaspoons every 3 hours. Yesterday, she was the happiest baby ever. I changed her diaper as soon as we got there and she was waiting to surprise me. I had not put the clean diaper down before she squirted poop clearly across her insulet. Thank you QUINN! Correction, after making me jump and dodge her rocket style poop, she was a happy baby. I could have sat there all day long and watched her smile. I would talk to her and you would have thought I was telling the funniest joke. One time, I promise she had a little laugh. It was probably a smile and a random noise. But I will believe what I want!! If anyone ever needs their heart softened...show them the smile of a baby that has been fighting for their life. I cannot describe how beautiful it truly was to see her smile. Then she kept smiling and I was in a little piece of heaven. When I was holding her, she was lifting her head off my chest. Even the nurses were shocked to see her lift her head. She is sucking on a pacifier. She is preparing for the next step...boobie...or bottle!
I am hoping Miss Brooklyn gets jealous of her sister's newly found freedom and stars moving up in the NICU world. Her breathing is fine with the C-Pap. I just think because of her size and only feeding at 7cc, they have to wait on graduating her to the cannula. She is working so hard to be like her big sister. I just want to help her in all the ways I can. Her feedings are still at 7cc. She is working hard and is just a bit behind. Soon she will be just as big as Quinn. Although I am proud to say that she is becoming a regular in the pooping category. YAY for Brooklyn!!!She is so adorable. She loves that pacifier too! I truly look forward to the day she can look at me a smile.
They are both just the highlight of my day. I can't wait to see them every evening. It has been a little over a week of good days and I can't wait to have more good days.
Oh yea, we did get to bathe the girls last week. It was great. I was expecting to make them scream like they have before with baths, but neither one made a noise. I can't say the same for their facial expressions. It felt good for us to be able to bathe them. The "hands on" technique the NICU has in place is great. They say it is good for the babies, but I am convinced it is better for me. I get to have a motherly hand in NICU and lessons from nurses on the care of the babies.
Counting down the days til my babies are home...
We really need Miss Brooklyn to gain weight. She is fluctuating so much and she needs more weight to get her very own cannula and be like her sister.
