From Pregnancy to Birth then onto the NICU

08-26-10

I had to take off work on Friday. Nana Anna went on a weekend trip. I took this opportunity to take Miss Brooklyn to get her blood work drawn for her Endocrinologist appointment next week. It was horrible! She screamed and fought it. She hasn't been poked in a while and it was unbearable. The nurse said that she was really strong for her age. She fought us and screamed the entire time. Luckily, the nurse got enough from her arm and didn't have to poke her anymore. In the end, it will ultimately just end up another scar on her small little body. It is a bit sad but if you really look at the girls arms, you see little scars. Brooklyn has one on her neck from her IV in her neck. It is sad really. They have more round scars on their hands. Getting back to the point...I took them to the dr. all by myself. This amazing feat has NEVER been done before. The key to making it work is time management. I didn't leave on time and had to feed the girls in the waiting room after we were done with Brooklyn's appointment. Afterwards, we went to Staples so I could get some envelopes. Then we made our way home. Surprisingly so, it wasn't a bad experience. Don't get me wrong. It is important to have a strategy. Parking is a vital decision. I have a Cadillac for a stroller and it must be able to squeeze between cars. We made it back in one piece. I actually felt a sense of accomplishment after Friday's activities. It was nice! To top it off, Richard and I went out for the night.

Saturday, was great too. The five of us just sat around watching football. Toby went to the doggie "pretty parlor" and he was loved by everyone, of course. He has this certain charm about him. I called to see if he was all done and the lady said yes, he was done but you can't come get him. Six people walked in when I was getting him and said they loved him and wish he could stay. He has this effect mostly on women but men love him too.

So I have finally done it...I got it...it is completed. I had a goal of recording Quinn and Brooklyn talking to each other. I will have to see if I can upload to this blog. It is so funny. Well, I think it is funny because I love it. It is a sight to see the looks on their faces. When Quinn talks to you she seems to not really stop. She starts and just can't stop. Brooklyn has a look of concentration on her face when she talks to you. And when you talk back or coo back to her, she thinks it is the most wonderful thing in the world. Her face lights up with amazement every single time. My favorite is her inquisitive look.

They are finally reaching out to grab stuff in front of them. Their play mat has toys hanging from them and if the girls are on the same mat, they seem to fight over the hanging duckie and not the monkey. I witnessed a tug of war between them. It was their first fight.

Both of them have been fighting a cold. They have had lots of nasal congestion for the last couple of weeks. Well on Friday, 10-01-10 at about 2am, Quinn woke up and was severely congested in her chest. She sounded like a grown man hacking up a lung. It was so pitiful. So I stayed up with her and called the doctor at 730am. The nurse wanted me to put the phone up to her and listen to her wheezing. After hearing her, she wanted me to take her directly to the ER or even call 911. So of course, I was freaking out thinking the worse. By the time we got to Gwinnett Medical, she was fine. She sounded fine and looked perfect. The ER doctor told me there was nothing that could be done. You can't give babies decongestants or cough meds. He said this form of Bronciolitis (glorified severe cold) is non responsive to breathing treatments. Needless to say, I expressed my frustration on him. He stuck by his story that nothing could be done. I told him it had been three weeks. He said that it could be more weeks. I am just supposed to watch them and wait. So basically the advise nurse at the pediatrician freaked out and sent her to ER just so I could pay $150.00 to be told that there was nothing anyone could do for her. Lovely. So we wait for them to get better. It is so painful to watch. I had to listen to her struggle to get a cry out. She was so congested that her little cries were cut short. All I wanted to say was that I get you can't do anything for her. But I am the one that has to take her home and listed to both her and her sister struggle. Thanks Buddy!

I cried the entire ride home. I hate feeling so helpless. I hate it so much. It is my understanding that this feeling never goes away...it just subsides. Having children helps me understand so much more. Unfortunately, it makes me want more control.

We did weigh the girls this week. Brooklyn is working her way to double digits. She weighed 9lbs even. While her big, and I mean big, sister weighed 10lbs and 11oz. Porky Princess eats up to her name.

Cereal has been going good. Everyday is better. We were supposed to start greens last week. But I was told not to start new food when they are sick. Maybe the cold will subside enough to start greens this week. They are eating really well and I think Brooklyn has perfected the mouth full of food "spitting contest." She thinks cereal time is play time. I keep telling her to not talk with her mouth full. She doesn't listen very well. Everytime I feed her she gets to laughing and I get sprayed with cereal. Then she laughs more! She is a little comedian.

We are off to the Endocrinologist on Friday. Keep Brooklyn in your prayers.
